The first thing you need to consider when choosing a wedding centerpiece is: How many? You would hate to put time, effort and money into 25 centerpieces and discover you only need 20, or even worse be short on that all important day.  So figure out how many tables you will have, including the guest book, cake, and wedding party tables.  Then decide if you want a centerpiece on each table.

The second thing you want to think about when choosing a wedding centerpiece is: Do you want the same one at each table?  Some people will do 2 different centerpieces and place them on every other table.  You may also want to consider a smaller centerpiece for the tables with the guestbook or cake, since that is usually the focus of those tables.

Once those two decisions are out of the way you need to make another big decision: How much are you going to spend on the wedding centerpiece?  This is very important since you need to pay for all those centerpieces.  Once you have a figure in mind you can decide if it is enough to buy centerpieces fully made or if you will be making them yourself.

The next decision for your wedding centerpiece is: What color and theme do I want?  You will probably want to use the same colors as your wedding colors, or at the very least use ones that match well.  Choosing a theme is extremely important to make the whole reception blend together.  For instance if you were having an elegant evening reception then sand and shells in the centerpiece would look odd, but candles would go well.
